The Raid Pyrenean
Inspector Steve Hague from Stevenage recently returned from cycling across the Pyrenees with his friend Gareth in order to raise money for Prostate Cancer. They were attempting to cycle from the Atlantic Coast to the Mediterranean Coast in less than 100 hours a challenge known in cycling circles as “The Raid Pyrenean”. The raid takes in 18 major “Cols” many over which are categorised climbs in the “Tour de France”. Fewer than 5000 people have successfully completed this since the early 1960’s.
Steve described the journey as “long and arduous”. During the ride they climbed in excess of 24000 feet much of which was at inclines of 12% or greater. During the 4 days they both suffered from heat stroke and sickness and both suffered major mechanical problems. Gareth said “We soldiered on with a true British grit and determination despite serious saddle sores and temperatures in the mid 30’s”. Above all Steve said “we could not have done this without our support team, The Soigneurs, Jacqueline, my sister, and Jacko, (ex Herts PC Mick Jackson), to them we will be eternally grateful. Thank you to all from the Constabulary who gave their wishes and sponsored us. We have raised over £2300 for a great cause.
We would like to say a big congratulations to Steve and Gareth for completing this amazing challenge and for raising such a fantastic amount!
Blue Boys Walk – 31st May 2009
Gerald Sims organised the first annual Blue Boys Walk on 31st May 2009. The walk was a 10 mile round trip to and from the Waterside rest Goytre Wharf via Folly Pontypool Park. The 80 walkers had beautiful weather and

Charity calendar
Karen King came up with a brainwave last summer to raise money for The Prostate Cancer Charity by organising a charity calendar. She managed to find some willing volunteers to pose for the calendar in the form of her local policemen! Once the shoot was complete and Scotland Yard had given their approval the calendars went on sale in October. Karen managed to sell 480 calendars raising a fantastic amount of money for The Prostate Cancer Charity. She would like to say a huge thank you to all the models and photographer who gave their time up at no cost. A big thank you from all of us here to Karen for all her hard work. Capital Sporting Dinner
A Capital Sporting Dinner, in aid of The Prostate Cancer Charity, was held on 26 November 2008 at the London Marriott Hotel.
After a four course meal, rugby icons Andy Ripley, Willie John McBride and Sean Fitzpatrick entertained over 200 guests with stories from their sporting careers. Andy Ripley also spoke about his personal perspective of living with prostate cancer after he was diagnosed in 2005.
An auction was held at the end of the evening which raised over £1000 for the Charity.
2,500 mile Cycle Challenge
Tom Eaton and Jack Keevil cycled 2,500 miles from England to Turkey to raise money for the charity. Their journey took them through France, Switzerland, Leichtenstein, Austria, Italy, Slovenia, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania and Greece to their final destination, Turkey – where they were welcomed by The Mayor of Datca and television reporters.
Tom’s father is diagnosed with prostate cancer so this was their motivation to keep going despite wet conditions and a fall along the way. They have raised £660.
