Case Study: Standard Life

Employees at Standard Life raised an impressive £150,956.76 in 2002/03 to help fund The Prostate Cancer Charity Specialist Nurse post at The Falkirk and District Royal Infirmary NHS Trust for a three year period.

Maureen Hamill is now nearly three years into the post and she has seen a total of 2,832 prostate cancer patients in the period August 2004 - March 2007. The number has increased significantly due to more patients being transferred from Consultant clinics to the specialised Nurse Led service. Maureen provides highly individualised assessment and care for men affected by prostate cancer, and also provides phone support to these patients, their concerned relatives, social services and health care professionals, answering around 50 calls a week.

Standard LifeStandard Life's support has been greatly beneficial, as it has allowed The Prostate Cancer Charity to address the needs of men with, or at risk of, prostate cancer in the Forth Valley and surrounding areas in Scotland. The NHS Trust has recognised the significance of this role and is ensuring the continued funding of the post.

“This post would not have happened without the support from Standard Life. Before I came into post men with prostate cancer and their families were often unsupported throughout their cancer journey. Forth Valley Health Board quickly realised the benefits of having a specialist nurse and I'm delighted they are continuing to fund this post.”

Standard Life continued their support by kindly sponsoring the printing of 600,000 Real Man drinks mats. The drinks mats featured a fun and interactive pub quiz which encouraged men and women to text in their answers to win prizes, whilst learning important facts about prostate cancer. The drinks mat campaign was the main driver of the The Prostate Cancer Charity's awareness raising campaign and a total of 947 entries were received.

"As part of our continued support of the work of The Prostate Cancer Charity we are pleased to have been able to provide funding for the printing of the Real Man drinks mats which will be used during Awareness Week. We believe it's very important that men know all about their health, and we wish The Prostate Cancer Charity all the very best with their Awareness Week campaign."
