Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Dinner
The Prostate Cancer Charity held it’s first ever Prostate Cancer Awareness Month Dinner in 2010, on 31 March. Supporters, corporate partners, volunteers and researchers connected to the Charity were invited as a thank you for their support in making this year’s Awareness Month the most successful yet.
The dinner was held at the May Fair Hotel in London and we were delighted that The Rt. Hon Sir John Major KGCH, former Prime Minister and Patron of the Charity, was our guest speaker. In keeping with this year’s PCAM theme of “Don’t let prostate cancer hide”, Sir John was asked to reveal a fact about himself and he delighted our audience with his secret talent for poetry.
We are looking forward to next year’s PCAM already and hope to repeat what was a most enjoyable evening. View pictures of the evening.
The Couples Project
The Couples Project launch was held on 25th March 2010 at the Drill Hall in central London. The performance was the finale in what has been an eighteen month project exploring the many issues that men with prostate cancer and the people in their lives face together. Photography and recordings of personal accounts formed the material for the Couples website www.prostatecouples.com and the performance.
The project was undertaken by Dr Daniel Kelly and Tim Wainwright and funded by the first ever Jeremy Gambrill award, set up in memory of one of the Charity’s trustees.
The performance was acted by Maggie Steed, Joseph Marcell, Carolyn Pickes and Simon Chandler. We were delighted that it was a complete sell out and people in attendance included health professionals and some of the Couples themselves.
The performance has been filmed and the DVD will be available soon. For more information please contact Claire Blackburn: claire.blackburn@prostate-cancer.org.uk or call 020 8222 7687.
The Charity would like to thank everyone involved in this project.

Sing for Noel (and all other men)
We held our first ever carol concert – Sing for Noel (and all other men) - on Friday 11 December at St. John’s, Smith Square. We were delighted to have Clive Anderson as our host, who introduced the Bath Male Choir, Metro Voices and the Choristers of Reigate, St. Mary, accompanied by Stephen Disley on organ. There were also readings by Max Clifford, Rudolph Walker and Barrie Rutter.

There were 250 people in attendance who enjoyed the carol singing and the other performances, including a very dramatic and funny piece by Barrie Rutter! Our audience also had the opportunity to put a message to a loved one on our Christmas tree, which is now being displayed in the Charity’s Head Office in Hammersmith.
120 people also came to our post concert VIP reception with the performers. M&S kindly donated the mince pies and mulled wine for the reception.
We are already looking forward to next year’s instalment and hope that you will be able to join us!
Research in action – 24 June 2009
Fifty nine guests recently joined the Charity for an evening reception in the Medicine Now gallery at the Wellcome Collection, Euston Road to hear about the research programmes that the Charity is funding. John Neate, the Charity’s Chief Executive, gave an overview of the research programmes which were approved for funding earlier this year in which the Charity doubled its investment in scientific research to over £1 million. This was followed by Prof Colin Cooper, Dr Mat Caley and Prof Ken Muir who all gave a brief synopsis of their work.

The guests were a mix of key supporters from all areas of the Charity’s fundraising and included representatives from Tour of Britain, Movember, Marks & Spencer, Sharp Electronics and some of the higher level supporters of the Research Action Fund programme.

House of Lords Lunch
On Wednesday 19th November the Earl Howe hosted a luncheon for some of the Charity’s supporters and researchers. Over 120 people gathered at the House of Lords to hear about the achievements of The Prostate Cancer Charity’s research programme and what this might mean to men with prostate cancer.
We were delighted that both Earl Howe and Dr Chris Parker were able to speak at the event. Dr Parker provided us with a fascinating insight into the challenges and opportunities facing those working in prostate cancer research, while Earl Howe offered his perspective on cancer issues and highlighted the importance of raising awareness of prostate cancer on a national level.
The event has received excellent feedback already and provided a unique opportunity for supporters and researchers to feel part of the Charity. Our thanks go out to Earl Howe for hosting this event.
