The National Library for Health Cancer Specialist Library runs the Prostate Cancer National Knowledge Week every year in March. This is a showcase for work which goes on throughout the year. The Cancer Specialist Library sifts the prostate cancer literature and highlights high quality and important publications.


PROSDEX is an interactive website designed to help men decide whether or not to have a PSA test. It was developed by Professor Glyn Elwyn, Research Professor in Primary Medical Care, Cardiff University, the NHS Cancer Screening Programme, Cancer Research UK and Oxford University.

Professor Glyn Elwyn, Research Professor in Primary Medical Care, Cardiff University, "In developing PROSDEX we have worked closely with men who have a broad range of experiences relating to PSA testing and prostate cancer. This means that PROSDEX is designed specifically to meet the needs of men by encouraging them to think through the consequences of the test before they request one."

Julietta Patnick, Director, NHS Cancer Screening Programmes said, "We know that more and more men are requesting PSA tests, however, the issues surrounding PSA testing are very complex. This innovative new site will provide men with the information they need to make an informed decision about whether or not to request a PSA test."


CancerNursing.org is offering a free online nursing course on prostate cancer. Supported by an educational grant from The Prostate Cancer Charity, this course is aimed at health professionals.


Macmillan logoMacmillan Cancer Relief run the The Living with Cancer self management programme consists of six 2 1/2 hour weekly sessions delivered by two professionally trained tutors who have experienced cancer themselves. Participants develop their skills and learn techniques to get more out of life. It's FREE to anyone who has EVER had a cancer diagnosis and there's no referral process, but participants do need to book a place.

UK Prostate Link LogoUK Prostate Link provides a searchable database of quality-assessed links to prostate cancer information on the Internet. It is designed to serve as a "first port of call" for prostate cancer information. The site is pioneering a new approach to web portals, in which they directly assess the quality of the information they link to.


Please Ask LogoThe National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA) has a new campaign to empower patients be more active in managing their health. The Please Ask campaign provides practical, accessible information about patient safety and encourages patients to feel comfortable asking questions about their NHS healthcare and raising concerns with health professionals.


Best Treatments LogoBest Treatments is a website from the BMJ Publishing Group. It uses the results of thousands of research studies to give the evidence behind diagnostic tests and treatments. Includes a detailed description of prostate cancer staging and the TNM system.


Cancerbackup logoCancerbackup provide information on all cancers, including leaflets on talking about cancer and the emotional effects of diagnosis.


Citizens Advice logoThe Citizens Advice Bureau provide information and advice on getting financial help with the costs of cancer including travel and prescriptions. See your phone book for contact details of your local service.



Dipex logo At the Dipex site you can watch, listen to, or read personal experiences of prostate cancer and other medical conditions.


Going for a logoAt the Going for a is a virtual hospital from the Royal College of Radiologists. Interactive information on cancer treatment and scans. Includes descriptions from both staff and patients.




Macmillan logoMacmillan Cancer Relief has leaflets on men and cancer, close relationships and cancer, and talking to children when an adult has cancer. Information on benefits and grants to help with the costs associated with cancer.


Hospice InformationHospice Information is a joint venture between St. Christopher's Hospice and Help the Hospices. It brings together the experience and established reputation for high quality of the Hospice Information Service at St. Christopher's and the national remit and innovative information developments of Help the Hospices. Together, they want to provide a world-class information service for health professionals and members of the public, on UK and international hospice and palliative care.


Cancer Campaigning GroupCancer Campaigning Group is a coalition of 28 national cancer charities representing many different forms of the disease. The Group, which is now in its fifth year, is dedicated to raising awareness of the issues around cancer and seeking improvements across four main areas: prevention, care and treatment, patient involvement and choice, and research.


MalecareMalecare is a US based group of experienced patients and doctors, many of whom are diagnosed with prostate cancer or testicular cancer, writing weekly updates on treatment choice strategies and how to live with the consequences of those choices.


Cancer HelpCancerHelp UK is a free information service about cancer and cancer care for people with cancer and their families. It is brought to you by Cancer Research UK. They believe that information about cancer should be freely available to all and written in a way that people can easily understand.




Cancer HelpCouncillor Brian Chaplin, currently Mayor of Cheltenham, having been diagnosed with Prostate Cancer, founded the Gloucestershire Prostate Cancer (Brachytherapy Unit) Trust in July 2001 and received Charity registration in November 2001. The Trust was set up to fund treatment in a Brachytherapy Unit within the Oncology Dept. of Cheltenham General Hospital for patients early diagnosed with prostate cancer and latterly, the salary of a physicist for the unit's surgical team.
