This involves taking small pieces of prostate tissue to look at
more closely under a microscope for signs of prostate
cancer. You may hear it called a transrectal ultra sound
(TRUS) guided prostate needle biopsy. The aim is to detect prostate
cancer that has the potential to cause symptoms or affect your life
expectancy.
A biopsy is one of several tests that may be
offered to you if your GP refers you to a hospital specialist for
further investigation.
When you visit a specialist, they may repeat some of the tests
done by your GP, like the PSA test and the DRE. If
they are concerned that you may have prostate cancer, they may recommend you
have a biopsy. They
should discuss the advantages and disadvantages of
having a biopsy with you to help you decide whether or not to have
the test.
You may not be offered a biopsy if your specialist thinks you have
prostate cancer that has spread outside of the prostate gland. In
this case, you may be offered another test, such as a bone
scan.
