Ex-England Rugby Legend Andy Ripley wins Rugby Book of the Year for Ripley’s World at the British Sports Book Awards
18th March 2008 Ex-England rugby legend Andy Ripley was earlier today named the winner of the Rugby Book of the Year Award at the British Sports Book Awards in London.
His book, Ripley’s World, published October 2007 by Mainstream, is an intimate and moving account, in diary form, of his battle with prostate cancer since he was diagnosed.
All royalties from the book have been donated to The Prostate Cancer Charity, for whom Ripley continues to campaign. Despite 35,000 men each year being diagnosed with the illness, it is a subject that Ripley feels is talked about far too infrequently.
Andy Ripley was capped 24 times for the England international rugby team throughout the 1970s and was one of Willie John's invincible Lions in 1974. Now a successful businessman, he has held the world indoor rowing record for heavyweight men for 10 years. Born in 1947 and raised in Liverpool, he now lives in Surrey with his wife of 30 years and has 3 children.
