The Great PSA Debate
10 November 2009, The Pump Rooms, Leamington Spa
John Neate, Chief Executive, spoke at this one day event organised by The Prostate Cancer Support Federation, in collaboration with Prostate UK and the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust. The purpose of the debate was to discuss the Motion:
"Every man at risk of prostate disease (i.e. all men over 50, and those 40 with other risk factors) should be encouraged to check his PSA every year."
John Neate presented the Charity's new policy on prostate cancer screening and the PSA test. He emphasised the need for a systematic opportunity, to be provided by the NHS, for all men to exercise an informed choice about the PSA test - but that this should not amount to active encouragement for men to have their PSA tested annually.
The Prostate Cancer Charity is currently leading the development of a new model that will provide all men with this opportunity. Read more about the Charity's policy on prostate cancer screening and the PSA test.
“I would like to congratulate the Prostate Cancer Support Federation, Prostate UK and the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust for jointly sponsoring this important debate. I think there are many points on which we agree and we look forward to working with our colleagues in driving forward improved access for all men to balanced information on the benefits and limitations of the PSA test and, for those men who choose it, to the test itself."
