'The Right To Know; The Right To Choose'
- The Prostate Cancer Charity believes men have ‘The Right to Know’
that the PSA blood test exists, that they can ask their GP for the test
and that they can expect to receive unbiased advice to help them decide
whether or not to have the test. They then have the opportunity to
interpret that in relation to their lives and attitudes, and make an
informed choice to pursue the PSA test, or not, as they see fit.
- The Prostate Cancer Charity believes that once a man is aware of
what the test can and cannot do, he should have ‘The Right to Choose’
to have a PSA test if he wishes. He should be supported in whatever
decision he makes, and know that he can revisit that decision over time.
- The Prostate Cancer Charity will press Government and research
institutions to increase funding and to accelerate research designed to
find a more precise test to distinguish between aggressive and slow
growing prostate cancer - to be used as the basis for an effective
national screening programme.
- The Prostate Cancer Charity will support screening men for prostate
cancer when an effective screening technology is developed, or robust
research evidence shows that men’s lives are saved by the current test.
We believe that the evidence should continue to be reviewed and the
case for screening constantly re-evaluated.
