The authors state that 2.3% of the men tested turned out to have prostate cancer after further investigations."

New molecular test to improve prostate cancer diagnosis announced
On 21 September 2007, Gen-Probe launched the PROGENSA™ PCA3 test. It is a urine test to aid in the diagnosis of prostate cancer. The test uses the presence of PCA3 (a genetic marker for prostate cancer) to predict for prostate cancer, and can be used in conjunction with current tests to confirm diagnosis.

For the first time ever, The Prostate Cancer Charity is supporting research projects across the UK. Seven different projects were awarded a total of nearly £800,000.
These grants have been given following a national ‘Call for Research Proposals’ for prostate cancer specific applications from all UK research establishments. The Charity received 49 requests for funding as a result. All the applications were peer reviewed by an international panel and the strongest applications were selected by a Research Advisory Committee made up of leading researchers, clinicians and men who have been affected by prostate cancer.

At a major conference on prostate cancer this Monday (16th July), Dr Chris Parker from The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden Hospital, deplored the lack of clinical trials for men with the disease. “Every year 32,000 British men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK. By 2020 two-thirds of people diagnosed with cancer should still be alive after five years, say Cancer Research UK.
The goal is one of ten ambitious targets set out by the charity for the future of cancer care. It comes as figures show a patient with cancer now has a 46.2% chance of being alive ten years after diagnosis compared with 23.6% 30 years ago. The Department of Health backed the targets and said work was needed to further improve cancer prognosis. Increased survival over the past three decades can be attributed to earlier detection of cancer, greater use of specialist surgery, cancer screening programmes and advances in treatments.

FDA seeks more data from Dendreon pioneering therapeutic cancer vaccine
LONDON/CHICAGO (Reuters) - Plans by U.S. biotech company Dendreon Corp. to market a pioneering therapeutic cancer vaccine were dealt a blow on Wednesday when U.S. regulators demanded more data before approving it, sending the company's shares plummeting 60 percent. Just over a month ago the stock more than doubled in a single session when a U.S. Food and Drug Administration advisory panel recommended approval for the vaccine, called Provenge.

Dr. Chris Hiley, Head of Policy and Research at The Prostate Cancer Charity said: “It would be totally unacceptable if hormone treatment were being prescribed for men with prostate cancer simply in order to meet treatment target times - when it is not required to treat their cancer. It has nothing to do with patient centred care or good medicine."
