My Story

In 1994, a close friend of Ron Weedon’s developed prostate cancer. On his suggestion, Ron, then aged 66, started monitoring his own health. Ron explains "I was not made aware of any lifestyle activities that might reduce the onset of cancer. My PSA was 3.5 and regarded as normal for my age by the NHS."

What happened next?

"From November 1994 to June 2000 my PSA rose from 3.5 to 7.4. My GP in Wales explained that further exploration wasn’t recommended until the PSA reached 10. I worked out that I would reach PSA 10 by 2002/2003. In February 2001 I had a PSA of 6.7."

Were you happy with your treatment?

"Through the Internet and the excellent Cancer Research Campaign and Prostate Cancer Charity factsheets, I discovered significant differences in attitudes to early diagnosis, treatment and resources between the UK and USA. I also became concerned about the much poorer facilities available in Wales. My local health authority said nowhere in Wales provided the Free PSA test."

So where did you go for further care?

"I considered going to Seattle, but made private arrangements to see a Consultant at Charing Cross Hospital in March 2001. My Free PSA test came to 9.2. This indicated that I might have prostate cancer. My Consultant suggested I had a biopsy and it showed evidence of high grade PIN (prostatic intra-epithelial neoplasia) – a condition which isn’t cancer, but indicates a cancer might develop within the next ten years. I was prescribed Finasteride to reduce my enlarged prostate and in eight months my PSA has fallen to 3.5. I can’t be sure about the future, but I am happy to monitor my PSA and review the management of my condition accordingly."

Finally, what are your conclusions?

"We need more research on prevention. And I would suggest that men over 50 monitor their PSA – earlier if there’s a family history. We should pressurise our local NHS to provide adequate services and resources, raising awareness across the UK."
