My Story
In February 2002, Les Caldwell received unexpected and devastating news. He was diagnosed as having an aggressive form of prostate cancer – which required immediate treatment. In the eight weeks that followed, Les was given a course of injections, but also chose to undergo radiotherapy as part of a medical trial. Having come through, he’s now decided to share his experiences with people like you – who are doing so much to help ensure that, one day, there will be a more effective test and treatment for prostate cancer.
Week 1
My first treatment and Rosie, one of the radiographers, offers to deal with any concerns or questions I might have. I don’t have any! Everything is new and strange and I just need to see what happens. I’m a little taken aback when I get asked to take my trousers off – it’s only our first date!
Everything goes smoothly and I’m back every day for a radiotherapy session. I soon learn the ropes. So far, no side effects other than tiredness from driving the long distance to the hospital and back.
Week 4
My radiotherapy sessions and monthly injections have continued – now it’s time for my review meeting with Dr Mohan. I’m really impressed by the whole team at the hospital. Everyone is so cheerful, gentle and caring.
Week 5
I’m now feeling side-effects from the treatment – mainly tiredness.
Week 6
My treatment sessions are now shorter and for the last 12 sessions, they’ll be aiming at a smaller area which is the seat of the disease.
Week 8
My last week! And thank goodness it’s over! I have so many people to thank for what seems to have been a successful treatment – the doctors, nurses, but most importantly my wife, Val. She’s been with me every step of the way and made the difficult times seem easy.
