Forward together: Getting the Best for Men
On November 3rd, 2005, we hosted the second National Prostate Cancer Conference 'Forward Together: Getting the Best for Men', in London.
It was the widest reaching event of its kind in the UK. Four hundred people attended, including men with the disease, their families, support groups, health care professionals, policy makers, charities, politicians and business leaders.
John Neate, Chief Executive of The Prostate Cancer Charity pointed out: "Prostate cancer as an issue is gaining ground – but still too slowly. If we are to make the progress needed in raising awareness, in research and in NHS services, the pace of change has to be stepped up a gear. To do this, we urgently need to see a co-ordinated national campaign which is persuasive and determined. "Real men and their families lie at the centre of the statistics on prostate cancer. The impact of the disease on individual lives is far reaching."
'Forward Together: Getting the Best for Men' brought together everyone with an interest in prostate cancer. The conference shone a searching light on how the NHS treats men with prostate cancer and reviewed developments in research and treatment. It challenged complacency and stimulated discussion on joint action to move this issue forward.
Dr. Chris Hiley, Head of Policy and Research outlined 'The Real Man's Prostate Cancer Journey'. This included the much anticipated results of our First National Survey, which asked over 1,000 men diagnosed with prostate cancer about their experiences of NHS care.
Unsurprisingly, the survey revealed that some men suffered serious gaps in their care. You can read further details of our findings here.
