'Prostate What?’
Why Raising Awareness of Prostate Cancer is so Important
Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in the UK. Every year, over 30,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer and 10,000 men die from it – that’s more than one man every hour.
Despite these alarming statistics, 90 per cent of adults in the UK do not know what the prostate gland does and the crucial role it plays in a men’s sexual function. Finding out about prostate cancer early could improve a man’s chances of finding a successful treatment.
Who needs to know about prostate cancer?
Every Real Man should know about prostate cancer so here are some key facts. The risk of getting prostate cancer gets higher as you get older. Most men are diagnosed over the age of 50, but it can affect men from the age of about 40. You are two and a half times more likely to get prostate cancer if your father, brother or son has been diagnosed. African Caribbean men are also at a higher risk.
How can you help?

Our new logo
Our new logo features a man symbol instead of the letter T in prostate cancer. It aims to get across a masculine, no nonsense feel, and the fact that prostate cancer is all about men. Publicis has very generously created the new logo completely free of charge.

Our ‘Real Men Know All About it’ Campaign
Our latest public awareness campaign was launched in September 2005, initially through a radio advert with Ricky Gervais, but followed up by many newspaper advertisements – all provided free of charge. The aim is to get men over 50 more familiar with their prostate gland, prostate cancer and our charity.
