The ride of his life
At 37, David Hillier was diagnosed with prostate cancer and was told he had two years to live. After treatment in New York and London, there was nothing more to try. Nothing that is, except riding a bike. “My consultant told me that exercise would help me. So I started riding a bike. Around this time I decided that I needed to help raise money to help fund research into prostate cancer.”
Now five years after he was diagnosed, David is no stranger to spending time in the saddle to raise money. On July 1st David and a 20-strong team completed the 120-mile British leg of the Tour de France between Greenwich and Canterbury raising over £150,000.
It was just the latest in a long line of challenges on behalf of The Prostate Cancer Charity. In 2006 David helped raise £30,000 as part of a team that tackled Etape du Tour, the mountain stage of the Tour de France.
In 2005 David and some close friends raised a staggering £230,000 when they completed the Five Boroughs Bike Ride in New York. “The more I cycled the more my tests improved, so I just kept going! I’ve now had negative tests for over 18 months.”
David’s determination continues to be an inspiration. The funds and awareness he has helped to raise for The Prostate Cancer Charity have helped towards research and providing our crucial support services that exist for the countless number of men who have found themselves in similar situations to David.
Thank you David.
