The equivalent of one player in every men’s football team in the UK will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. It’s a frightening statistic. So what is being done about it?
We asked Phil Marsh, one of 280 men who took part in The Real Man Cup, a 5-a-side football tournament which raised £6,000 for us this year. “I knew little about prostate cancer before the event. But I learned a lot. Anything that can be done to tell people about the risk factors and the help the Charity offers should be done.
"It was a brilliant day. And when I found out that John Barnes was going to be there I was so excited – he's my hero! There was a real sense of camaraderie. I can't wait until next year!"
Reducing the risk
Events like The Real Man Cup are helping to raise awareness of prostate health amongst men. Every year 35,000 men are diagnosed and 10,000 men die, yet there is little understanding of the most common cancer amongst men in the UK, by those at risk from it.
As well as helping to raise prostate cancer awareness, The Real Man Cup educated men to look out for their own prostate health. Players learned that you may be able to reduce your risk by:
- Eating more fruit, vegetables and plant-based foods
- Eating less red meat and animal fat
- Maintaining a healthy weight and being physically active
- Reporting any health problems to a GP
