Jeremy Gambrill Award – Improving the experience of men living with prostate cancer
The Prostate Cancer Charity announces a competitive award to the value of £25,000, open to applicants based in the UK.
The award is to cover the costs of delivering both a project and written report which will make a practical contribution to improving the experience of men with prostate cancer. The selection of the winning project will be made by The Prostate Cancer Charity, following an interview of shortlisted candidates at the Charity’s offices in London.
The award is made in memory of Jeremy Gambrill, a former trustee of the Charity who died of prostate cancer in 2002, aged only 54. A former marketing director of Jane’s publishing house, Jeremy set up his own publishing company in 1996. The following year he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. From that moment, he began a relentless fight to improve the quality of life for cancer patients by giving them a voice, contributing hugely as a patients' advocate in the NHS and beyond.
The aim of the Jeremy Gambrill Award is to encourage practical ways of improving the experience of men with prostate cancer, through the ‘patient journey’ of referral, diagnosis, treatment and living with a cancer diagnosis. The physical, psychological and social consequences of diagnosis and treatment are ripe areas for improvement.
Anyone can apply. The award recipient could come from a non professional or professional background. e.g. [this is not an exhaustive list]:
- Health professionals
- Men with prostate cancer or people affected by it
- Policy makers
- Health service researchers
The award could be used to fund, for example, travel abroad to a prostate cancer centre of excellence, with specific objectives and outcomes to be brought ‘home’, or a project looking at the experience of men with prostate cancer who are more likely to be subject to inequality in experience through, for example, age or ethnicity. You may want to do a feasibility study of some aspect of care, or a pilot study of a more developed idea.
We will accept applications from groups of people, but one person must be named on the form as the Key Contact for the Awards process.
The Award will be made to support an original and free standing piece of work. It cannot be used as a salary replacement or enhancement for an incompletely funded piece of work already in progress. There must be a written report submitted that shows the results of the project. The Prostate Cancer Charity may assist in the dissemination of the results from a successful project and expects to been given credit for the funding it has contributed.
The Application Form must be submitted to the address provided by 5pm on Tuesday, 17th June 2008. A selection committee, made up of people affected by prostate cancer, will be short listing applications on 25th June 2008 and we will be interviewing short listed candidates on 15th July 2008. We will be announcing the successful applicant during the week commencing 21st July 2008.
