African Caribbean Prostate Cancer Awareness
The African Caribbean Awareness Project (ACAP) was launched in September 2003 to raise awareness of Prostate Cancer within the African Caribbean community groups and promote access to health care services.
Based on the American experience, we expect that African Caribbean men in the UK will have a higher incidence and mortality from prostate cancer than other groups. This is confirmed by data from East London, presented at the British Association of Urological Surgeons annual meeting in June 2003. This showed that African Caribbean men are almost three times as likely to develop prostate cancer as white men. (1)
The Prostate Cancer Charity responded to these concerns by setting up the ACAP, supported by funds from the Department of Health. This 3 year project aimed to raise awareness with this under represented population group in a number of key regions. A final report assessing the success of this work has been produced (Annual report is in PDF format. It can also be downloaded as a Microsoft Word document here).
Following the success of the African Caribbean Awareness Project, The Prostate Cancer Charity has recognised the continued need amongst African Caribbean communities for information and awareness. Further work with African Caribbean communities is now an essential part of the Charity’s work.
