Awareness Week Launch – Keighley Police Station


Keighley police station backed the Prostate Cancer Awareness week campaign this year following the death of former West Yorkshire Chief Constable Colin Cramphorn, who died last December after losing his battle with prostate cancer.

This was the third year the Bradford prostate cancer advisory group had successfully been involved in awareness week, and like all the other years before, a week of activities were organised to help raise awareness in Bradford and Keighley.

Awareness Session for African Caribbean Communities in Bradford - The Federation of African Caribbean Elders


Over 50 Elders from the African Caribbean community got together at Mary Seacole Court, (an exciting multi-cultural housing scheme) to discuss issues regarding prostate cancer and how it affected both men and women.

The event was a huge success with both men and women providing person accounts and support to those recently affected by prostate cancer.

Awareness Session for South Asian Men in Keighley - The Sangat Community Association


The Sangat Centre is a household name amongst the Asian community of Keighley so it was only right that we hold an awareness session there. Over 40 male elders from the Muslim Community attended the session in the hope that they learn about prostate cancer and in doing so help to inform other members of their community.

3 year grant by The City Bridge Trust

We are pleased to announce that The Prostate Cancer Charity has been awarded a 3 year grant by The City Bridge Trust. The grant will be used to run the ‘Older and Wiser’ programme aimed at raising awareness of prostate cancer amongst men aged 60+ from Black and Minority Ethnic communities in 6 London boroughs.

First of four Manchester City FC Prostate Cancer Awareness commercials

The Prostate Cancer Charity and Manchester Public Health Development Service have joined forces to help raise awareness with football fans.

A series of four 10 second commercials, each with a powerful message/fact will be showcased on seventy one 42" plasma screens around the stadium live on match days during the year.

The average attendance at Man City is 42,000.

Play reading

Irina Aggrey, Olivette Cole-Wilson, Mensah Bediako & Benjamin ZephaniahWe have commissioned a play written by Benjamin Zephaniah to help raise awareness.

The consultation read through of Prostate, using actors, took place on Tuesday 4th July at the Riverside Studios, Hammersmith, London, and it was a great success. Advisory group members from Liverpool, Bradford and Bristol attended the read through along with others such as Rose Thompson from Cancer Backup, and Melanie Lee from Macmillan cancer relief.

"Very entertaining", "A good mix of humour, seriousness and knowledge", "Excellent awareness raising project" were just some of the many positive comments following the play reading.

Luton carnival

Suresh Rambaran at the Luton carnivalThe annual Luton carnival took place on Bank holiday Monday 29th May. This is second largest carnival after Notting Hill.

Despite the inclement weather this year parade had over 50 different groups taking part with its diverse mix of carnival costumes, arts, music and culture with over 2000 people in the procession. Among them were mas bands, sound trucks, steelbands, DJ's and stilt walkers.

For the first time we were represented at such an event with our banners on sound music truck 'Sound Unlimited', which was decorated by flags of several Caribbean Islands to reflect the roots of carnival as well the Union flag.

Awareness Week in Bradford

Bradford supportersThe Bradford prostate cancer advisory group has yet again made prostate cancer awareness week a huge success in Bradford. The week was launched by the Lord Mayor of Bradford, Councillor Valerie Binney and community health workers at Cottingley Hall Nursing Home in Bingley who last year raised over £3,000 for the charity.


Sir Vivian Richards goes into bat for us

Sir Vivian Richards, Suresh Rambaran and Patricia CohenSir Vivian took time out from his busy fundraising event for the Sir Vivian Richards Foundation on Friday 18th November, which was held at The Oval, to lend his support to the African Caribbean Awareness Project. Sir Vivian along with two of the charity’s Support and Information Specialist Nurses – Suresh Rambaran and Patricia Cohen - showed off their prostate cancer charity Know About It wristbands, and in doing so helped promote The Prostate Cancer Charity and its African Caribbean work.

The Sir Vivian Richards foundation is currently raising funds to set up a Prostate Cancer awareness centre in Antigua, which will liaise with other islands throughout the Caribbean.

2nd Prostate Cancer Charity Dominoes tournament

Men enjoying dominoesOver 80 men attended the dominoes tournament in Bradford on Saturday, 1st October. Although it was a very close match, for the second year running the Federation of African Caribbean Elders team were able to beat the Dominican Association. A Caribbean lunch and entertainment followed the tournament along with information on prostate cancer.
