New African Caribbean Community Champions working in Lambeth
We are proud to announce that four new African Caribbean Community Champions have successfully completed the Volunteer Training Programme for the London borough of Lambeth. The programme is part of the Older & Wiser Project which aims to raise awareness of prostate cancer and the heightened risk in African Caribbean men. Volunteers are trained and supported to raise awareness in their local community through giving talks to local community groups or holding information stands at local events.
Richard Reid, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2005, was keen to become a volunteer and raise awareness in his community, he said “It’s important that Black men realise how common prostate cancer is, and what can be done to avoid the situation becoming critical.”
The new volunteers will be adding to the work already being carried out by trained volunteers in the borough of Newham. We are now calling for volunteers from the Borough of Hackney and surrounding areas.

Former Miss England rides at the Tour of Britain in support of the Charity
We are delighted to have support from Rachel Christie, former Miss England, who is eager to help raise awareness, particularly in the African Caribbean community.
She says, “Being African Caribbean, I know that men of my heritage are more likely to develop prostate cancer than white men. Research needs to be funded to find out why this is the case and if there is anything that can be done about it. This is why I am so proud to support the work of The Prostate Cancer Charity.”
The professional track and field athlete, and Olympic hopeful, swapped her running gear for a bicycle at the Tour of Britain, where she rode the final stage of the Tour alongside other supporters such as Daley Thompson, Nicholas Bailey, Mark Bright and Rudolph Walker.
“As an Olympic hopeful, keeping fit and healthy and pushing myself to the limits are important aspects of my life - I guess it must run in the family! The Prostate Cancer Charity’s Tour Ride is an excellent way of keeping the fitness levels up and promoting cycling as a healthier and more eco-friendly transport option. I am proud to take to the saddle and help promote cycling and also raise awareness of the most common cancer in men in the UK.”

The Prostate Cancer Charity chosen as the official Charity for The Notting Hill Carnival 2009
After a period of lobbying, we were successful in being named the Official Charity at the Notting Hill Carnival. This permitted us to display our banners at prime locations throughout the carnival and its associated events, such as the Carnival Costume Splash, at which our newly trained Community Champions manned an information stand. Several costume bands displayed our banners on their floats and information leaflets were included in 1000 goody bags. With over 1 million people attending the carnival this was a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness, and the Charity’s profile, among our targeted high risk African Caribbean audience.
