Who needs to know about prostate cancer?
Prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men - finding out about it could save your life, or the life of someone you love.
The risk of getting prostate cancer increases as you get older. Most men are diagnosed over the age of 50, but it can affect men from the age of about 40. You are two and a half times more likely to get prostate cancer if your father, brother or son has been diagnosed. The risk is also higher if you are of African Caribbean background.
However, prostate cancer does not just affect men – it also affects their friends and family. During Prostate Cancer Awareness Week it’s important that information about this disease reaches as many people as possible, so that we can help our fathers, uncles, brothers and sons, husbands and partners know all about it.
Why raise awareness of prostate cancer?
32,000 men are diagnosed every year
Early diagnosis could improve a man’s chances of finding a successful treatment, yet 90% of adults in the UK do not know what the prostate gland does and the crucial role it plays in a man’s sexual function.
One man dies every hour
Prostate cancer has, until recently, been overlooked as a serious health issue facing men. This means that not enough research funds have been targeted at solving the problem, so we still don't know how to prevent it, screen for it and treat it effectively. The time is right for men, and those that love them, to take action to change this.
We need your help to:
- Raise money to help us find the answers; improve treatments, develop better tests, save lives
- Inform more people about prostate cancer; who is at risk, how they can get help, what treatments are available
- Raise awareness about prostate cancer; tell your story to the media so more people are aware about this disease and how it affects men’s lives
How YOU can help
We have posters, drinks mats and information leaflets to help support your activities, all of which contain vital information about prostate cancer.
At your workplace
Display posters around your office / in the canteen/ in the loos. Give an information leaflet or drinks mat to your colleagues. Set up a display in your foyer or reception with posters and leaflets, so colleagues and visitors know it’s Prostate Cancer Awareness Week.
In your local area
Ask your local shops or services to display a poster and give an information leaflet or drinks mat to customers during Prostate Cancer Awareness Week. e.g. sports shop, snooker hall, library, leisure centre – any place you think men may be.
If these places have a café / bar / eating or drinking area, ask them to display a poster and distribute the drinks mats.
Local groups or clubs
Organise an activity, such as a quiz or a raffle, at your local group or club (e.g. golf, working men’s club, gym, Rotary or Freemasons) for Prostate Cancer Awareness Week. Ask your club to include an information leaflet with the next mail out or newsletter. Display the posters, drinks mats and information leaflets at your next meeting.
