‘What makes a Real Man’ photo competition

The Real Man campaign | Awareness Week 2006

MFI logoThe Prostate Cancer Charity’s all new awareness drive focuses on men being aware of their health, in particular their prostate, through the ‘Real Men Know All About It’ campaign. We asked you to tell us in 100 words or less about a ‘Real Man’ in your life and what you think makes him a ‘Real Man’. This could be about your grandfather, father, husband, partner, friend, or perhaps you think you are a 'Real Man'. This competition is now closed and the winner will be announced soon.

The celebrity judging panel includes Andy Ripley and writer and broadcaster, Vivienne Parry. A selection of photos was uploaded into our photo gallery.

Ray WinstoneEast End tough guy and Hollywood actor Ray Winstone says: "A Real Man is a man who realises he is not invincible and pays attention to his health, especially if it starts to go wrong. A bloke can act as hard as nails but be terrified of going to the doctor, or talking to a loved one, if they think they have a prostate problem - a Real Man will try and overcome that fear in the hope of beating or treating the problem before it becomes far more serious."

Men actually, really don’t need to listen. Men never ever need ask for directions. Men never go and see their doctor. Real Men never pass up the opportunity of keeping their mouth shut. Real Men are quite good at listening. Real Men do actually ask for directions. Real Men go and see their doctor. Happily, Real Men are not a dying breed."

Dr Hilary JonesMedia doctor and practicing GP Dr Hilary Jones says: "Real Men are perfectly in touch with their feminine side, they drive their hybrid car to the ballet and are fragrant and caring. Preferring latte to lager, and carpaccio to curry, they are sexually discreet, politically correct and tolerant egalitarians in the workplace. Choosing Brokeback Mountain over Blade Runner, moisturizer over megabucks and body piercing over body building, these pitiful big-girls blouses are clearly NOT Real Men. But as a Real Doctor and Real Man myself, I only wish that more Real Men would front up to prostate cancer and join our genuinely serious 'Real Men Know All About It' campaign today."

Martin OffiahFormer Great Britain Rugby League player Martin Offiah says: "A Real Man is one who is not afraid to look himself in the mirror each day and be proud of what is staring back. A Real Man is one who is true not only to others but also to himself. A Real Man is someone who is not afraid to be himself whatever that maybe."

Steve WrightBBC Radio 2 broadcaster Steve Wright says "A real man is a guy who goes and gets his health checked and gets checked earlier - rather than later."
